Louise Riley

Riley created two pieces for Eiffel.

I.

Source is a compilation of salvaged bicycle wheels, embroidery thread, gold leaf, gold chain, shower curtain rings, key rings, S hooks and the force of light- all in the form of a ten sided polyhedron, the Decahedron.

Riley arrived from London to live in Eiffel Society and create the pieces as inspiration came. She worked closely with Tina, the intern turned committed weaver, weaving day in and day out. Life is Art Collective members fought over the bicycle wheels, each of which took days to complete.

II.

Visible only to the keenest of attentions, CATALYSTS floats high overhead in the skylight above Eiffel Society's three teared ceiling. Embroidered in thread on tulle, its figures change with light and appear to float. In response to Riley's inquiry as to whom she should embroider, Kirsha said: A mythological characters of course. Who is the architypal couple that represents all you are thinking about? Riley: No, they have to be living people. Kirsha: What?!! Why?!! Riley: That is just the rule! They must be living. K: Well... it should be the founders of the [New Orleans Contemporary Art Center] then.

And that is who was embroidered.
